Hello.
Resding your book was helpful with regard to the shine when applying paint my paper always dries too quickly or else I apply more paint too soon.I will try and practise looking more carefully.
I would like to have seen how much paint you used to make a strong mix, say pea sized with a small brush? I just don't know.
I also think it would be useful to know if you had all your mixes made up ready to use beforehand it surely takes time to get the colour strength right for each section.

what an excellent book. I have tried to learb watercolou painting with books which are not very informative. I tried to joimn a local course which did not start so downloaded you book. I am just about to start and it looks excellent givin proper explanations of the techniques needed which I was hoping to get from a local course and do not appear in the books I got from the library. Thanks a lot for the excellent (free) book!! It is a great utility, and the best is that the basics are not left out. Most courses assume a level of knowledge, and don't let one walk before trying to make one run! If I had read the colour mixing chapter before buying the tubes of artist quality paints, I would have saved quite an amount of cash!!

The thing is... if I would spend as much time painting as I have spent reading about it, I'd probably be an acomplished painter by now HaHa. Just what I was looking for

I discovered your site through UTube, your video was the best of all the various ones I had looked at. I always promised myself that I would have a go at painting when I retired as I enjoyed this subject at school. So in September this year I enrolled at a local school. The teacher is very good but of course its only for 2 hours a week. Your e book is just what I need to give me the encouragement to practice, practice and practice and the videos on how to paint skies and trees are excellent and are available to me 24 hours a day! I am even thinking of getting a laptop so that I can practice anywhere and refer to videos for inspiration

I would like to know what can be used to make a gloss shine on water colour paint. the reason I ask is that I draw insects and paint them,so far I do not know how or what material is used to create the shine on their wing covers like beetles etcetera I would appreciate any advice

Hi Bob,
I am a hobby painter and, like you, semi retired after 50 years in industry. I have a couple of dozen books on painting and most of them contain exactly the same information, the bitts I dont want.
Your information, on the other hand, seems to strike a chord and I find it readable, instructive and useful. It seems, to me at least, that its purpose is to give me information about watercolour painting not to impress me with how clever the author is.
I look forward to your future information in whatever form.

Finding you on the web was a real serendipity! I started watercolour painting on a holiday in Scotland in the mid 70's , did about one painting a year. Have had spurts of enthusiasm also have a small library of watercolour books, but your information and teaching are the greatest I've come across. I have been inspired anew. I gave you five stars because it's free! Really there was one disappointment for me...not avoidable. And that is that our trees and colours in Australia are so different. Yes, I ought to teach myself to adapt the techniques. But I would love to see a eucalypt being painted in one of your videos. They are so beautiful the way they drape. But their leaves don't cluster. Mind you, I am still proudly painting my English looking trees!

I've only been doing water colour for a couple of months after years of wanting to do some. Haven't done more than a one day (useless) course yet. So you are working with a totally blank slate! I would be interested in doing an online course depending on time and finances.

E-Book Thoughts

I thought the E-book was very interesting. I had mastered most of the techniques already but I found the course as a whole a great review of techniques. I especially liked the part on painting people. I would like some more advanced techniques for watercolor painting, in essence I would like to learn to create the fine detailed works of the dutch masters (ships, rigging, people, etc.) Watercolor painting has always forced me to negate the fine details and reach for the larger picture. As a man of science, I always get caught up in the fine details; missing the forrest for the tree.
